Every day more information comes out on how important getting enough fiber is for good health. This is because the fiber in foods we eat feeds the good bacteria in our guts that produce all kinds of beneficial compounds and help us absorb vitamins and minerals! So it’s very important that we eat a variety of fiber rich foods. Here are 5 of my favorites that will have your gut buddies feasting!
1) Sunchokes- also known as Jerusalem artichoke. This tuber has lots of inulin which is a particular favorite of our gut bacteria. It has has nutty flavor and is easy to make by roasting.
2) Asparagus- another good inulin source. Asparagus is a great source of healthy fiber and a host of micronutrients.
3)Broccoli- in addition to fiber broccoli is a great source of sulfur. This often overlooked nutrient is essential for healthy gut bacteria and also helps keep our blood and immune systems healthy.
4) Sweet Potato- lots and lots of soluble fiber! Sweet potato are basically 100% awesomeness for gut bacteria.
5) Psyllium Husk Powder- this is actually a fiber supplement. I recommend taking 1 teaspoon a day of this mixed with 8oz of water. It’s basically like giving your gut buddies a big does of their favorite food. Plus it helps you feel fuller longer so the urge to overeat is much less!
