Gut health has become a major health concern in the past 20 years. We are now learning that not only is gut health important, it might also be the key to reducing inflammation and helping to heal from many autoimmune diseases and lose weight.
One important part of healing the gut is eating foods that nourish it by helping to encourage the right bacteria to grow in the gut to promote health. These foods contain fibers, phytonutrients and other nutrients that the good bacteria in your gut love!
Here are 5 foods that helped me nearly clear psoriasis from my skin and heal my gut. They are all common foods and easy to find and prepare.
Leafy Greens- good bacteria love leafy green vegetables. Lettuces, spinach, kale, arugula, cabbage and more! These are one of the preferred foods to help improve gut health. Want to super charge your greens? Add a dressing of extra virgin olive oil and apple cider vinegar or balsamic vinegar. These both encourage a healthy gut.
Avocados- these amazing fruits (yes fruits!) are chock full of healthy fats, fiber and vitamins and minerals. I make a daily smoothie with 1/2 to 1 full avocado and spinach. You can also eat them sliced on salads or as guacamole with cassava chips!
Jicama- never heard of this one? Don’t worry your not alone. It can usually be found in the grocery store although you may have to hunt for it. It contains a special fiber that is one of the best foods for bacteria that produce mucus in your gut that helps it to heal. I like them cut into sticks and dipped in avocado mayo!
Sweet Potato- sweet potato contain a special starch called a resistant starch. It doesn’t spike blood sugar levels like a normal potato and the resistant starches are a favorite food of your gut buddies.
Coconut Meat- coconut is a gut healing super food! It has healthy fat and fiber that good bacteria eat up and little sugar to encourage bad bacteria from proliferating. Try sprinkling unsweetened coconut flakes on a bowl of coconut yogurt. It’s delicious and very gut healthy!
