A Tale of 2 Cars

Pain is often what gets people to seek chiropractic care, however as I tell my patients often, by the time pain is present the underlying cause of the problem has been present for a longer period of time.

Spinal subluxations, or bones out of place, are what cause the pain associated with many neck and back problems.  The actual symptoms can be headaches, sciatica, should pain, neck or back pain or feelings of tightness and stiffness just to name a few.

What often goes overlooked is that the cause of almost all of these subluxations is a combination  personal posture and repetitive strain. In other words, what you do all day with your body.  In order to illustrate how this works I’m going to use an example many people will be familiar with.  If you wait until you have pain to come the chiropractor, it’s like waiting until the “check engine” light is on to get the oil changed in your car.

To further illustrate this concept lets say you have two brand new cars, with zero miles on them.  They are the same make and model and are exactly identical.  Both cars are purchased the same day and driven off the lot. Lets say we are going to follow each of these cars until they reach 100,000 miles.

Car A’s owner does everything right. They get all the routine maintenance done on time, they use the proper oil, rotate the tires and replace the brake pads when they are worn out.  If there are minor accidents the damage is repaired by an expert mechanic who restores the vehicle to as close to its pre-accident shape as possible.  This is a well taken care of vehicle all the way until 100,000 miles.

Car B’s owner does the exact opposite. Maintenance is done rarely, if at all.  They often wait several thousand miles over to change oil. The tires are never rotated so the car rides unevenly.  Damage from accidents is repaired by a buddy who “works on cars”.  This vehicle is poorly maintained all the way to 100,000 miles.

Now let me ask you. Which care would you rather have? The well maintained Car A or Car B which has essentially been ignored and is probably falling apart? Of course you would rather have Car A.  Even though they started exactly the same how they were taken care of directly influences what shape each car is in at 100,000 and I think you’ll agree the difference is significant.

The human body is not so different from this, at least from a mechanical standpoint.  When joints in the spine are misaligned it puts pressure on the spinal nerves exiting the spine. This causes the function of the muscles and organs to decrease and this tends to worsen over time much like a car wears out over time.  Proper care of the body, much like the car, greatly slows down the wear and tear and allows for better function for much longer. Chiropractic treatment is the primary way that we ensure proper alignment of spinal joints and thus proper function of the nervous system.

I typically suggest people get their spines checked twice per month when they are feeling good.  This is because 2 weeks is typically the amount of time it takes for spinal vertebrae to start slipping out of position again following an adjustment due to our posture and repetitive strain from our job, hobbies and life events.
