Back Pain Explained

Virtually everyone will have neck or back pain at some point during their lives.  Back pain is one of the most common problems people experience and its cause can generally be traced back to 3 primary things.


1) Misaligned Spinal Joints- the most common cause of back pain. Misaligned spinal joints cause pain due to loss of normal movement in the spine. They also put stress on the surrounding muscle and connective tissue.  This cause of back pain can be easily treated with chiropractic care.


2) Tight Muscles- tight muscles can be due to injury or overuse.  Tight muscles cause soreness on their own and can contribute to misaligned spinal joints (see above).  Tight back and neck muscles respond well to icing and massage therapy.


3) Wear and Tear on Spinal Joints- this shows up on x-rays as arthritis or on MRI’s as herniated discs. If a spinal joint remains misaligned for extended periods of time the spinal joints slowly wear out.  As this occurs people start to notice more back pain and stiffness.  This worsens over time.


The good news is that most back pain is easy to resolve or at least improve.
