Headaches are one of the most common complaints I see as a chiropractor. And many of these people will tell me that for them headaches are “normal”. They often have 1-5 headaches a week. Some folks even have a headache daily.
Often these people are taking pain medications daily to manage the pain which, of course, further damages their digestive tracts, liver and kidneys. Its not uncommon for me to talk to people who take 8 or more capsules of Advil a day!
This is where I have to tell them… No headache is normal! Pain is a normal reaction to something in the body being amiss. An ankle is painful after spraining it. A sore back is the body letting you know you overdid something to try to get you to stop using it so it can heal. A headache is no different. In fact, most often headaches are from a combination of personal posture and repetitive strain caused by work or play overstressing the neck muscles which then become tight. As we continue to use these muscles anyways we start to get headaches.
It is quite simple to see then how most headaches will continue to occur and in fact get worse over time without either A) completely overhauling your posture and life or B) getting chiropractic adjustments periodically. So how does chiropractic care help with headaches?
Lets briefly cover some basic anatomy. The whole body is controlled and regulated by the nervous system. This includes the brain, spinal cord and all the peripheral nerves which go to the muscles and organs. When a muscle such as the ones in the neck are overused and become tight they pull the spinal vertebrae they connect to out of alignment and begin to press on the nerves exiting the neck. This causes a further decrease in the Function of the muscle which tightens further. Now you’re really in a pickle because you are most likely continuing to over use the muscle while having the nerve being compressed and causing additional muscle tightness.
Chiropractic adjustments work by finding the areas of the spine where the bones are misaligned and causing problems and gently moving the bone to relieve pressure on the nerve. This allows the muscle to heal naturally and as the muscle function returns the headaches go away. I can’t tell you how many people I have seen how have headaches for months or even years and after a few weeks of chiropractic care the headaches are just gone.
